Unenkaltainen hämärä imagines a world abandoned by humans, where only echoes of ancient liturgies, factory ruins and oceans glimmering with microplastics serve as evidence of the anthropocene. The album’s theme and sound sources were captured during an artist residence in Benin, and later finalised in northern Finland in 2017–2018.

On the opener Silmä tottuu hämärään (which roughly translates as ”the eye adjusts to the dark”) chords stack on top of each other, creating a meditative phasing drone with minimalistic variations. The hallucinogenic journey gives breathing room with songs like Keväthoure, whereas the fury-filled priest of Ilta-aurinko summons a dark catharsis to his damned flock. Finally the water level rises and drowns out the view on Ja vesi nousee nousemistaan.

The album’s electronic textures were crafted with modular eurorack synthesizers, which were also used to manipulate field recordings of wailing Easter choirs and fishing boats reeling off to the sea. Disintegrated synth loops are counterbalanced with acoustic sound sources of violin, clarinet, trumpet and traditional balafon percussions, which in conjunction result in dreamy and at times harsh soundscapes.
